Bill is the kind of sports-movie coach who would normally arrive with all the answers. Here he arrives with a drinking problem, a damaged family life and no reason to believe coaching will fix him. The girls are not props waiting for wisdom; their resistance, humour and own problems repeatedly expose how little authority he has actually earned.

The team improves through ordinary high-school work rather than elite-athlete spectacle. Roles become clearer, effort stabilises and the players gain trust in one another. The modest scale helps: this is not a national recruiting story, just a team trying to become competent while its coach tries to become functional.
